Chapter 10

Alex drifted in a haze of pain. There was something pressing on his chest. He couldn’t manage more than short, painful gasps. Various parts of him throbbed and burned, and the suffocating need for air shredded his focus, but he knew what mattered. There. The silver. Follow that. He turned his head fractionally in the right direction.

His Alpha said somewhere above him, “Turn a little south.”

Vibrations buzzed his sizzling nerves as his body tilted, then straightened out. He slowly recognized the feel and sound of a helicopter. He vaguely remembered riding in a car, then being lifted aboard here. How long ago? He licked his parched lips. A sliver of ice touched them, and Royston said, “You can’t have a drink but this might help.”

A woman said irritably, “You know he needs a hospital and surgery, right? At the very least, our clinic, and shifting a couple of times with all the support I can give him.”

“We know.” Royston’s tone was deeply irritated. “You said so. You also said he’d live a while yet.”

“Hopefully. It’s touch and go. If he was human, he’d be dead.”

“Good thing he’s not, then.”

We are human. He wasn’t sure why that felt so important. A trickle of ice water in his mouth loosened his tongue. “Dylan?” He blinked hard, opening gummy eyes. Royston’s face swam into view above him, peering down with an angry expression. “Alpha?”

“Hey, Alex.” Royston touched his face. “What the hell did you do?”

“Hm?” His head spun, and nausea washed through him.

A less familiar voice said, “Enough, Roy. We need facts first.” Alex was shocked to see Rick Brown bending over him beside Royston. He tried to bow his head and couldn’t move, but he managed to lower his eyes.

Brown said, “I’m going to ask some questions. Answer as simply as you can and save your strength. Was that a government installation you were in?”

“Yes.” He managed barely a trickle of sound. He couldn’t put air behind the words. “I think. Soldiers.”

“How many wolves do they have in captivity?”

Now? He tried to remember. Landon. Joe. Keenan. Dylan. God, Dylan. “Four. One cub.”

“Five with the cub or four?”

“Four.”

“Do they have proof of what we are? Videos?”

He licked his lips, his tongue working back and forth as if out of his control, and he had to wait for another ice chip before saying, “DNA test. Prob’ly video.”

“Shit!”

He twitched at the explosive oath from the most powerful wolf on the continent, wishing he could hide. Brown pressed his shoulder gently. “Not your fault.” He glanced behind him and said to someone unseen, “Code Red. Tell Owen to get the word out for plan B. Start the first stage, but hold off on the rest till I say go.”

“Yessir.” The unseen man moved farther away and then Alex heard him mumbling something unintelligible.

Brown said, “Alex. You’re tracking someone who’s still with them, yes?”

“Yes. Bond.”

“Good man. Who is it?”

“Dylan.” He wanted to explain, but his breath was so short, and it would take more words than he could muster to explain Dylan.
